Hurricane Harvey Anniversary: Are you prepared if another storm hits?

As we approach the one year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey, there are a few lessons we learned that are good reminders as we are back in another hurricane season. VideoEnvy teamed up with the East End Chamber of Commerce to bring you important stories from around the community in our Houston Rebounds communications outreach. Here are a few important takeaways we talked about right after the storm.

Make sure you have a business contingency plan in place. Look back at Hurricane Harvey and see what worked and what didn’t work.

“You need processes outline beforehand to know what you are doing on a regular day to day business and how to alter it during a disaster.”

Jenny Justice, Account Manager, Point 5 FTE

Don’t just focus on the employees that are impacted by the storm, take time to meet with those not directly impacted.

“For the employees that are not impacted, make sure you focus they are going to have extra duties maybe for an extended amount of time. Make sure you have a plan in place so you can offer assistance to both sets of employees.”

Bonnie Scherry, G&A Partners

Think about social platforms in the event of an emergency, especially if you pre-plan posts and schedule them out ahead of time.

“Be sensitive with your communication. Make sure you are giving your clients something of value…. Maybe offering extra support based on your business.”

Danelia Argueta, Project Z

Plan ahead with free resources for business owners offered by the City of Houston at HoustonTx.gov/obo

“They can make an appointment for free legal advice, business counseling, financial counseling.”

Abigail Gonzalez, City of Houston
