When you edit the video, the technique that you use to switch from shot to shot is called a transition. And over the years, there have been trends in transitions. For a few years, slow dissolves were very popular. There was also wipes like this. Fades are used at the end of the video. We even have audio transitions, commonly called a nat sound pop. Like this.

Most video editing uses straight, simple cuts like these. When you edit your video, you want to make sure your transitions have a purpose. Where are they taking the viewer? What emotion are you trying to add? The biggest rookie mistake we see from editors is using all sorts of transitions just because the program offers it. So next time you edit a video, think about those transitions before you put them in place.
