Thursday Tips: Nat Sound

Thursday Tips: Nat Sound

Today’s Thursday Tip covers Nat Sound. That’s short for natural sound and it’s what can make an emotional connection between your viewers and the video that they’re watching.
It makes the image on the screen more real and makes your video seem natural.

I was recently watching this great video of a young couple meeting their adopted daughter for the first time. The little girl is coming out of the building, and the parents are going up. And I’m super engaged. And I’m waiting and I’m waiting. I see it happen, but I don’t hear anything.

I don’t hear the little girl cry and the parent’s cry. And the video falls flat. It didn’t have any of what we call nat sound. And that’s hearing what’s going on around you. And it’s a critical part of storytelling.

I want to show you an example of a video that we did. Check out the story on this family and listen to what you hear.

There you go!

Yeah, nice!

I’ve always wanted to be a dad but I never imagined that it would be like this.

Yay.

Yay. Good job, buddy. Good job, buddy.

And now I want you to watch this and listen to it when we take out that nat sound.

You can see there’s a big difference in the video. You lose that emotional connection, and the storytelling is lost. So, when you go to shoot your next video, make sure the camera mic is turned on and you’re capturing nat sound.
