I’ve been producing videos and telling stories for more than two decades. With each video, I always learn something new about an industry, person or cause. It’s what makes the job exciting. I always say I know a little about a lot of things. While each and every video is important, producing a video for a charitable cause is unique. Being able to tell the story of someone impacted by an organization can be life changing. The video can introduce the community to the cause. Or, inspire others to open their pocketbooks. And, sometimes, the videos can impact you personally.
In December, we interviewed several people that were formerly homeless. And, it’s not what you think. They weren’t lazy. They weren’t worthless. They weren’t drug addicts. They were people just like you and me. They had successful careers and families. Then one day life hit them hard. It wasn’t fair. Wendy saw a drive-by shooting that triggered PTSD. Veronica grew up being abused since she was a baby. Joseph was the victim of a terrible accident where the driver had no insurance. Joseph lost his leg and gained thousands and thousands of dollars of medical bills. Eventually he lost everything including his home.
You can’t help but think about the “what ifs” in your life. You can’t help but think how lucky you are. But, then you think we’ve got to bring this story to life. We’ve got to share this message to help others in this same situation.
Our video for Healthcare for the Homeless-Houston debuted last night to a nice sized crowd. As is typical at events, small chatter normally is heard at the start of the video. But, then the silence started. People listened. People heard the stories. People saw these men and women were just like them.
One HHH board member approached me and said the video made him cry. I can’t think of a better compliment. It means we hit a nerve. We made the situation real. We made him realize these homeless men and women were humans. They just needed a guiding hand to help them return to a life off the streets.
And, that’s when you know you’ve made a difference.
